South Salem High School National Honor Society

The National Honor Society is a nationally recognized organization known for its academic excellence and service to the community. It is sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

Qualifications

Qualifications for membership in the National Honor Society:

• Students must be at least a first semester sophomore or apply at the end of Freshman year to be inducted the following fall.
• Scholarship: 3.0 cumulative GPA and 6 semester classes of Advanced, AP, IB, or Honors academic classes.
• Active class participation, clear communication, excellent attendance is also required.
• Leadership: Positive attitude, initiative and reliability in class and in school activities.
• Service: Helpful to others in school and community.
• Character: Honest, reliable, courteous, respectful and perseverant.

Selection procedure

• Early first semester, for students who apply for the fall induction.
• Applications are reviewed and input is requested from the staff regarding applicants.

Transfer student requirements for membership in the NHS Chapter

• Complete one semester at South Salem.
• Show your NHS certificate to South’s advisor.
• Complete the SSHS student application to show that you meet the SSHS qualifications listed above.

NHS Membership responsibilities

• Participate in the formal induction.
• Pay annual $20 dues and fees.
• Attend 80% of South Salem National Honor Society meetings.
• Participate in 75 % of NHS activities and service projects each year. 
• Complete 40 hours of volunteer service during the school year; up to 20 hours may be over the preceding summer.
• If applying as a senior in the fall, you must complete 40 hours over the school year.
• Maintain a 3.0 GPA minimum.
• Take a minimum of 6 semester classes of Advanced, AP, IB, or Honors academic classes before applying, and continue taking some each year.
• Maintain an exemplary character.
