About the Registration Bulletin
The Registration Bulletin is designed to assist your planning for not only the next school year but also to allow you to think about your next steps after high school. As you are selecting your classes for next year, look for classes that will interest and challenge you.
Class selections are extremely important not only to you, but to our staff as well. Based upon your selections, we plan for the courses we will be offering for the entire school year. Please take your time in selecting courses and make sure to select those you really want to take.
Steps to select your classes
- Review the recommendations your teachers have made for you. Some classes are required based on your current grade level.
- Review the graduation requirements on page 4. Credits in specific areas are required for graduation as are Essential Skills in reading, writing, and math are required for graduation.
- Select classes that support your future educational and career goals. Be sure to take at least one honors or IB Course to prepare you for the rigors of college and/or the real world.
- If you have questions, ASK! Teachers, counselors and your parents can provide resources to help you make course selection decisions.
Start planning today for your future! The choices you make help determine your options. Whether you are looking to attend a college or university, transition into a career directly after high school, or are still undecided about what you want to do, South Salem High School has the classes to get you there.

Forecasting FAQs
Questions with hear often around forecasting time.
What happens if I don’t want to pick classes?
We’re so glad you asked! When you don’t pick classes, the counseling team has to pick them for you. Most often, we pick the courses that have the most space available. Ever wonder why you get placed in a class you didn’t choose yourself? It’s likely because you didn’t complete your forecasting.
Do I need to take a World Language to graduate?
No. However, South is an IB Middle Years Program (MYP) school. This means, all students in 9-10th grades will select a Language Acquisition course (World Language or ELD). We encourage our 11-12th grade students to continue language exploration!
The State of Oregon graduation requirements don’t require even just a year of World Language?
No.
But what if I want to go to a 4-year University right after high school?
Yes, then you need to have at least a “C” or better in two credits worth of the same World Language. Also, learning a World Language is really, really cool. Be cool, go learn a new World Language.
Ok, but can I take more than one World Language?
Wow, that would make you really, really cool. “Yes” is the short answer. If you are interested in taking any World Language though and can’t decide, choose 1 and put the 2nd or 3rd in your alternates.
Can I take more than one release as a junior or senior?
Sure! As long as you are caught up on your credits.
How many classes do I need to take in order to be eligible for OSAA sports and music participation?
Five.
How many classes do I need to take each year to be eligible for academic honors?
Five letter graded classes (A-F, not P/NP),
Can I retake a class for fun?
Absolutely! Well, actually, you can retake any class that indicates it is repeatable for credit. See the online course bulletin if you’re unsure whether a class can be retaken for credit.
What do I do if I need to repair a grade or retake a class?
We have lots of options available. Make sure to let us know at the bottom of your forecasting form that you want to retake a class and then talk to your counselor.
Can I take more than one release as a junior or senior?
Sure! As long as you are caught up on your credits.
Can I take multiple Sciences or English courses?
100% - especially during 11th and 12th grades. Just make sure to note that at the bottom of the google forecasting form.
Can I take two PE’s or classroom aide’s or study halls in the same semester?
Nah, not those classes. Try to broaden your horizons and try something new!
Why do I have to fill out so many choices?
We have to have enough choices (and alternates) to fill two full semesters worth!
What if I’m in CTEC?
For year one students we need you to fi ll out the forecasting form as if you aren’t going to attend CTEC. This is because every year we have students who opt out of CTEC because their interests or circumstances change.
Returning CTEC students, choose your Year Two CTEC program eight times
What if I don’t understand the course sequencing and how to select the pre-requisite for a class?
Please, please, please make sure to follow the course sequencing for each program that’s found in our course bulletin. If you still have questions, please talk with the teacher of the program, they are the experts!
What about classes that have approval processes?
Dynamic Leadership, AVID, LINK Leadership, Yearbook, CTE Leadership, Unified, etc. all need teacher approval to join the class. You can forecast for them, but you also must connect with the teacher to be added into the class.
What if I want to be a NCAA collegiate athlete?
There are specific courses and responsibilities you have in your high school years. Be sure to reference the NCAA eligibility information in the Course Bulletin.
Additional Post High School Considerations
What about my high school classes that offer college credit? Does that impact the Oregon Promise grant?
- Students cannot have more than 90 college credits completed, or attempted, to receive money from Oregon Promise. This means classes at your high school that award college credit count towards this credit limit IF you signed up to get college credit for them.
What are common admissions requirements for four year universities?
- C’s or better in all your core classes:
- English, Social Studies, Science, Math (at least Algebra II or Data Science)
- 2 years of the same World Language
- ○ Most 4 year colleges are looking for a minimum GPA of a 3.0
- ○ Highly recommended that you take 4 years of ALL core classes to be prepared for college/university
