IB Parents & Students
October is the registration month for International Baccalaureate Diploma Program Exams (IB DP) that will be given in May of this school year. It is important that parents and students carefully consider the options available for testing.
College Credit
IB exams result in grades awarded on a scale of 1-7. Each college and university may differ on how much credit they will award for IB exams. For example, most private schools will award college credit for Higher Level exams with a score of 5 or above, but most state schools only require a score of 4 or above. The policy for awarding credit for Standard Level exams will vary. Currently, for the class of 2025 and beyond, state laws mandate that all public institutions in Washington and Oregon must award credit for any SL or HL subject with a score of 4 or higher.
Biliteracy Seal
For students testing in either HL or SL level in IB French, German, or Spanish, earning a Grade 4 or above automatically qualifies the student for the Oregon Seal of Biliteracy.
Eligible Testers
In the first year of the IB DP Program (11th grade), students are not allowed to take more than two SL examinations. Students are not allowed to take an HL exam until their senior year.
Any student in the 12th grade who sat for both years of a two-year HL or SL course may test. In addition, juniors and seniors in a one- year SL course may test.
Testing Accommodations
Students with a 504 or an IEP must notify the IB Coordinator during IB exam registration if they need any testing accommodations. A student must apply directly to IB for any testing accommodation requests. Only IB authorized accommodations will be allowed, regardless of what is stated in a student’s 504 or IEP. The deadline to do so is the same deadline as the IB exam registration stated below.
Exam Dates and Times
Exam dates and times are set by the IBO and are not negotiable. The calendar of IB DP exams is available on the school's website. Exam dates and times cannot be rearranged and there are no "make-up" exams, regardless of circumstances. A student can re-register for a re-take for the following exam session next school year.
Regional and State Competitions
IB DP exams occur in the same month as many music and athletic competitions. Coaches and teachers will do their best to request compatible competition times, however we cannot re-schedule IB exams nor will refunds be issued for missed exams. Conflicts are likely, and students will have to choose to attend either an IB exam or an OSAA event.
International Competitions
IB exams occur in the same month as many international competitions. IBO will consider requests by candidates to take their IB exam at an alternative location only for events of “international significance.” The decision is completely at the discretion of the IBO and an additional fee of $55 is charged to the candidate. Please notify Mrs. Harris-Clippinger in writing of any international competitions you are involved in.
Registration of IB DP Subject Selection
Registration for IB DP subjects will be completed in IB DP classrooms. Students will use the directions posted here on the website.
